Every autumn brings its own crop of “best place to go out” round-ups. Since late August 2026, Time Out, Euronews and then the BBC have published, almost week after week, their rankings of the best cities for nightlife or urban quality of life. Searches for “best cities for nightlife 2026” are spiking on Google, so we decided to go through these lists, look for Angers, and above all see what none of them ever mention: who’s actually going to be there tonight, in the same place as you.
Bangkok, Berlin, New York: Time Out’s top three
To put together its “The world’s 20 best cities for nightlife in 2026” ranking, Time Out surveyed more than 24,000 locals across 150 cities worldwide before putting the results to an expert panel, according to Euronews. Bangkok takes first place ahead of Berlin and New York, with Melbourne and São Paulo rounding out the top five.
Only three European cities make this top 10, still according to Euronews: Berlin (2nd), Brighton (8th) and Amsterdam (10th), helped in part by WorldPride 2026. The methodology partly explains this narrow European showing: only the top-rated city from each country was included, Time Out notes.
“Every city offers unforgettable experiences for every kind of night out and every kind of person,” says Grace Beard, travel editor at Time Out, quoted by Euronews.
Barcelona, Paris, then Eastern Europe: the other ranking doing the rounds
Another ranking, from entertainment platform JB and cited by Voltage, tells a slightly different story: Barcelona comes first, with more than 300 bars and pubs per 100 km², ahead of Paris (2nd), then Prague, Budapest, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok and Tbilisi. Still according to this study reported by Voltage, 60% of travellers now say they pick their destination based on nightlife, a factor that has become central to a city’s appeal.
Paris welcomed almost 36.3 million visitors across Greater Paris in 2024, Voltage notes. Which goes some way to explaining how the same capital can be missing from one nightlife ranking while sitting on the podium of another, depending on each study’s criteria.
A third index changes the criteria entirely
While the nightlife rankings keep rolling in, the BBC published its own piece on Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index, which scores 1,000 cities across five measures: governance, economics, human capital, environment and quality of life. New York, London and Paris take the podium, followed by Seattle, Dublin, Boston and San Jose, according to the BBC. Tallinn makes the list of “cities to watch”, driven by its embrace of artificial intelligence and its Rail Baltica railway project.
Add up Time Out’s 20 cities, JB’s 10 and the Global Cities Index’s 10, and you already reach around forty names shaping this autumn’s global conversation. Put side by side, these three rankings form a kind of combined top list:
- Time Out (nightlife): Bangkok, Berlin, New York, Melbourne, São Paulo, then Brighton and Amsterdam further down the list.
- JB study cited by Voltage (nightlife): Barcelona, Paris, Prague, Budapest, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Tbilisi.
- Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index, reported by the BBC (overall quality of life): New York, London, Paris, Seattle, Dublin, Boston, San Jose, and Tallinn among the cities to watch.
Angers, unsurprisingly, doesn’t feature on any of these lists
Across this combined list of roughly forty cities, no medium-sized French city appears, apart from Paris. Angers isn’t mentioned in the Time Out ranking, the JB study reported by Voltage, or the Oxford Economics index covered by the BBC. Hardly surprising: these round-ups compare world capitals or megacities on criteria built for that scale, such as bars per square kilometre or annual tourist numbers.
But this kind of international ranking says nothing about what actually happens on a Saturday night in a medium-sized city. It doesn’t measure who’s going out, who knows whom, or who would love to widen their circle without waiting for their city to land a spot in a top 10.
What if the question wasn’t “which city”, but “who, tonight”?
That’s exactly the problem Premeets turns on its head. The app doesn’t rank any city: it shows who else has planned to be in the same place at the same time as you, whether that’s a bar tonight, a festival this weekend, or a hotel during a trip. Context comes before the profile: venue, neighbourhood and distance are shown before you even start chatting.
Whether you live in Bangkok, top of the Time Out ranking, or in Angers, absent from every list mentioned above, the question stays the same: who’s going to be there tonight, and how do you find out before you turn up? Mutual filters (age, gender, dates, activities) and messaging sorted by plan (friends, nights out, trips) exist precisely to help people organise in advance, whether for making friends, a night out or a date, not just for chatting someone up.
Joining an event through Premeets: the example of Angers’s Grand Barathon
In practice, Premeets lets you join an event already listed in the app directly, rather than just naming a random venue and date. Angers’s Grand Barathon, a pub crawl that brings the city centre’s bars to life, is a good example: you flag that you’re going, see who else has the same evening planned, chat beforehand to set a meeting point, and then actually meet up once you’re there.
The same principle works for any local event, far from the international podiums: a student night, a neighbourhood festival, a one-off bar crawl. Whether or not Angers makes it into an English-language ranking hardly matters; what matters is knowing who’ll be there.
In short
Rankings of the best cities for nightlife keep multiplying, sometimes contradict each other from one outlet to the next, and almost always overlook medium-sized cities. Angers doesn’t need a Time Out trophy for people to go out and meet others there, whether through an event like the Grand Barathon or simply by checking who’s planned the same bar on the same night.
